除了有充分理據顯示或經法醫檢查後判斷死者為自然死亡，本局作為刑事警察機關均須依法對一切可能涉及刑事成分的死亡案件進行調查，例如在住所或戶外發現屍體、因意外導致死亡等情況，以確定是否有人需要負上刑事責任。此外，若在交通事故中導致有人死亡，且有跡象顯示該事故是蓄意造成的，本局亦會介入調查，否則將交予相關警察部門處理。

With the exception of natural death indicated by sufficient justification or verified by a forensic physician, the Judiciary Police, as the criminal police body, as vested by law, must carry out investigation into all death cases possibly involving criminal elements, e.g. corpse found at residence or outdoor, cases of death caused by accidents, etc., in order to confirm whether someone is criminally liable.  Furthermore, in the event of a fatal traffic incident with sign(s) showing that the incident is caused intentionally, the Judiciary Police will also intervene in the investigation, otherwise it will be transferred to the relevant police authority for handling.

Salvo haja justificações suficientes ou após o exame médico-legal, se verifique que a morte de um indivíduo foi por causas naturais, a PJ, como órgão de policial criminal, deve, de acordo com a lei, efectuar uma investigação sobre todos os casos de morte que podem envolver matéria penal, como por exemplo, a descoberta de um cadáver numa residência ou ao ar livre, morte causada por acidente etc., com vista a determinar se alguém é responsável criminalmente. Por outro lado, se uma pessoa morrer num acidente de trânsito e houver indícios que mostram que o acidente foi causado de propósito, a PJ intervirá na investigação, caso contrário, o caso será transferido para outro serviço policial competente.
