Hong Kong man nabbed for involvement in aggravated theft

On 18th April 2025, at about 7:00 p.m., a Macao resident reported to the Judiciary Police that, 706 second-hand mobile phones which had been stored in a residential unit by him and his business partner had been stolen, resulting in a total loss of HK$1.8598 million.

It was learnt that, the victim of the case and his business partner jointly purchased 706 second-hand mobile phones in mid-April, and the goods were scheduled to arrive at about 2:00 a.m. on April 18th. As both of them were out of town at the time, they entrusted a man to proceed to the victim’s rented residential unit to collect the goods through a friend, and handed over the key to the man. After the man had finished receiving the goods, and the victim confirmed the completion of the receipt of the goods through a message at 3:00 a.m. on the same day. When the victim proceeded to the unit at 8:00 a.m. on the same day to check his goods, he found that the mobile phones had all been stolen. The victim tried to contact the man who received the goods, but to no avail. About half an hour later, the victim received a message from the other party who demanded HKD500,000 for the redemption of the mobile phones. The victim then reported to the police for assistance.

Personnel of the Judiciary Police discovered that, the man who received the goods had left the unit for a short period of time after receiving the goods, and headed back to the unit at about 5:00 a.m. on the same day to remove all of the above goods. Subsequently, the man who received the goods went to the lobby of a hotel in Taipa with the stolen goods, handed them over to two male accomplices and left the territory immediately. At about 12:00 p.m. on the same day, the two male accomplices entered a room of that hotel with the stolen goods, and left Macao about an hour later.

After investigating the involved hotel room, personnel of the Judiciary Police seized two suitcases which were suspected to be used for transporting the mobile phones, but there were no stolen goods inside the suitcases. On the night of April 19th, one of the above-mentioned male accomplices was intercepted when he re-entered Macau. After an in-depth investigation of the intercepted man, it was confirmed that, the man who received the goods had conspired with two accomplices to embezzle the goods, and planned to smuggle the stolen goods to the Mainland for handling.

The Judiciary Police transferred the intercepted man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of aggravated theft, while continuing to track down the individuals at large and the whereabouts of the stolen goods.
