Man from Hong Kong arrested for “Guess who I am” phone scam
The local female victim received a call from her “grandson” in her landline at home on the afternoon of 14th June 2024, in which the latter alleged that he had been detained in mainland China for a criminal case and had to urgently pay bail money of MOP 100,000, which would be later collected by a lawyer. The unwary victim handed the amount to a man, a self-proclaimed lawyer, who had come to collect the money on the ground floor of her residence. The “grandson” then called a second time to demand another MOP 150,000, which the victim handed again to the same man promptly on the ground floor of her residence. Only when the victim discussed the incident with her family two days later did she realise the scam, hence her report to the police.
Launching investigation, the I.T. Crimes Division officers of the Judiciary Police identified the involved Hong Kong man who was found to have fled Macao on the afternoon of the 15th. The Judiciary Police officers promptly launched deployment when he entered Macao again on the morning of June 17th. He was arrested when he was collecting fraud proceeds at the second local victim’s residence. MOP 30,000 of cash, which had been scammed out of the second victim in the same manner, was seized on him.
It was found that the involved Hong Konger had been instructed by a Hong Kong phone scam syndicate to pose as a lawyer, on three occasions, to collect fraud proceeds of respectively MOP 250,000 and MOP 30,000 from the two victims in two different locations in Macao. The suspect argued that he had received a cash reward of HKD 12,500 for helping a friend to collect the money in Macao.
Based on investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved Hong Konger to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of fraud (considerably huge amount), criminal syndicate and money laundering, while continuing to pursue the remaining involved persons at large and the whereabouts of the proceeds.
