Three mainland Chinese men arrested for exchange fraud
First case
Having arranged via social software to meet with a “money exchange gang” at a hotel room in Cotai on the afternoon of 5th January 2024, the two male victims were later encountered by the two involved mainland Chinese men, who instructed them to remit RMB 543,464 to a designated account in exchange for two stacks of 200 banknotes styled as 1,000 Hong Kong Dollars. They inspected the banknotes on site, only to find all of them to be counterfeit notes commonly known as “practice vouchers”, hence their immediate report to the police.
The Gaming-related Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police promptly launched investigation. During interrogation, the two involved mainland Chinese men denied their perpetration. One of the involved men had allegedly worked with the other involved man to exchange currencies to earn agency fees, while the latter claimed that he had been instigated to transact with the victim for a reward of RMB 5,000. He argued that the banknotes being “practice vouchers” was unbeknownst to him.
The two involved mainland Chinese men were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
Second case
On the evening of 6th January 2024, the male victim approached a “money exchange gang” on a social software for currency exchange. The involved mainland Chinese man later arrived to meet with him at a restaurant in a casino in Cotai. Having transferred RMB 200,000 as instructed to a bank account designated by another involved person at large, the victim was handed two stacks of banknotes, all of which were found, upon inspection on site, to be counterfeit banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”. He thus reported to the police.
The Gaming-related Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police promptly followed up the case. Upon investigation, the involved mainland Chinese man admitted to have been instigated to exchange currency with the victim for a reward, while denying his collusion with the other involved person on the run to defraud the victim of money.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved mainland Chinese man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount), while continuing to pursue the other persons at large.
