Hong Kong-Macao Police jointly busted trans-border drug trafficking syndicate, seizing 24 litres of liquid cocaine and arresting 3 persons
While the Narcotics Division of the Judiciary Police and the Narcotics Bureau of the Hong Kong Police were conducting regular intelligence exchange, a transnational drug trafficking syndicate was found smuggling liquid cocaine, disguised as red wine, into Macao via overseas, then transporting it to Hong Kong or other regions. Therefore, a joint investigation was immediately launched.
After screening, the Judiciary Police identified a man and a woman from Chinese Taiwan Region. The duo were found renting a hotel in Cotai district after carrying suspected liquid cocaine, disguised as red wine, to enter Macao on December 3rd. The Judiciary Police officers instantly notified the Hong Kong Police and made deployment. When leaving the hotel room on the afternoon of December 5th, the duo were intercepted. Eight bottles of “red wine” were found in the room, and 4 other bottles of “red wine” of the same type were subsequently discovered at a forwarding company in Central District. Emergency examination by the Forensic Science Department of the Judiciary Police confirmed the above 12 bottles, each of 1.5 litres of “red wine” to be the drug cocaine, which could then be refined into 6kg of solid cocaine, worth around MOP19.8 million. On the other hand, the Hong Kong Police also took action on the afternoon of the same day, arresting a Malaysian man at a hotel in Hong Kong Central District and seizing 4 bottles, each of 1.5 litres of “red wine” of the same type. It was believed that the related drugs had also been smuggled into Macao and in turn delivered to Hong Kong by the involved duo. In this joint operation, the police of both Hong Kong and Macao seized a total of 16 bottles, each of 1.5 litres of liquid cocaine, worth approximately MOP26.4 million in total, and all the drugs smuggled into Macao had already been intercepted.
The involved duo defended that a friend had entrusted them to bring the red wine from the US to Macao, and each of them could be rewarded with NTD100,000 upon completion of the task, yet refusing to provide other information.
The Judiciary Police and the Hong Kong Police Force successfully smashed an involved trans-border drug trafficking syndicate, swiftly curbing the circulation of large quantities of drugs. This was attributed to the meticulous intelligence exchange and the smooth policing joint action mechanism between police of the two regions, while demonstrating the determination and capability of police of the two regions to combat trans-border drug trafficking activities. Having transferred the involved man and woman to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, the Judiciary Police would continue, jointly with the Hong Kong Police Force, to trace the origin and flow of the drugs and the remaining involved individuals.
