Three mainland Chinese men arrested in the crackdown of three cases of exchange fraud involving “money exchange gangs”
The Judiciary Police received three cases of exchange fraud involving “money exchange gangs” on 25th November 2023.
Case one
The male victim from mainland China had arranged to meet with the involved fellow countryman to exchange currencies, using a social networking app, in a hotel room of a casino in Taipa. Having remitted RMB 93,500 to a designated mobile payment account as instructed, the victim found anomalies in the two stacks of banknotes handed to him by the other party. The duo thus handed the banknotes to the casino cashier staff for inspection, only to find that the two stacks of 200 banknotes styled as HKD 500 were all counterfeits commonly known as “practice vouchers”. The casino security guards promptly intercepted the involved man, who was turned over to the Judiciary Police. Another 100 “practice vouchers” of the same style were later seized on him.
Case two
The male victim from mainland China had arranged to meet with the involved fellow countryman, using a social networking app, to exchange currencies at the lobby of a casino hotel in Taipa. Having remitted RMB 186,800 to a designated bank account as instructed, the victim counted the HKD 1,000 banknotes handed to him by the other party, only to find that all 200 but the one topping the two stacks were “practice vouchers”.
Case three
The victimized mainland Chinese couple had reached out to the involved fellow countryman, using a social networking app, to exchange currencies at the lobby of a casino hotel in Taipa. After remitting RMB 140,100 to a designated bank account, the couple counted the three stacks of banknotes styled as HKD 1,000 handed from the other party, only to find that the three stacks that collectively contained 300 banknotes were all “practice vouchers”.
In the three cases above, all three involved men from mainland China admitted to have been instigated to exchange currencies with the victims in Macao for a reward of RMB 6,000. They were allegedly unaware of the said banknotes being “practice vouchers”.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved mainland Chinese man of the first case to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (massive amount) and the other two for the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
