Hong Kong man arrested in the crackdown of a case of “Guess who I am”
The local male victim reported to the Judiciary Police on 14th November 2023 that he had received a call from his self-proclaimed “son-in-law” in his landline phone at home, saying that he had been detained by the police for assault. Urgently in need of cash as a compensation for his bailout, he mentioned that a man would come to collect the money at a later time. The unwary victim handed MOP 50,000 of cash to a man, as requested by his “son-in-law”, near a building in Toi San. Only when the victim told his family about this incident did he realize the scam.
Promptly launching investigation, the I.T. Crimes Division officers of the Judiciary Police identified the involved Hong Kong man who collected the fraud proceeds, realizing that he had fled Macao the same day he collected the money. When he entered Macao again on November 15th, the Judiciary Police intercepted him when he was trying to leave Macao at Taipa Ferry Terminal that afternoon.
Upon investigation, the Hong Kong man admitted to have been recruited by a Hong Kong fraud syndicate, the upper level members of which had instigated him to collect the money in Macao this time, albeit without receiving further instructions at the end. He had allegedly posed as a lawyer to collect fraud proceeds of MOP 50,000 from the victim in Macao on November 14th, before being instructed by upper level members of the syndicate to exchange the proceeds into HKD 48,402 at a money exchange in Outer Habour Ferry Terminal. He then returned to Hong Kong by ferry to hand in the cash for a reward of HKD 2,500, all of which had been used to repay his debt and for daily expenses.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved Hong Kong man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of fraud (massive amount) and criminal syndicate, while continuing to pursue the other involved persons and whereabouts of the fraud proceeds. Meanwhile, intelligence exchange with police authorities of neighbouring regions will sustain to uproot cross-border telecom fraud syndicates.
