The Judiciary Police busted a telecommunication fraud case, with one Hong Kong man arrested for sending a large number of phishing text messages
In early September 2023, the Judiciary Police received a report from a telecommunication company in Macao, indicating that some residents complained that they had received phishing text messages from someone impersonating the telecommunication company, so as to defraud their personal and credit card information.
Personnel of the IT Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police found out that the involved man sent the text messages using the prepaid cards of the telecommunication company, falsely alleging that residents could redeem gifts with their remaining points by clicking on the link attached in the messages, in an attempt to deceive their personal and credit card information. He fled Macao after the perpetration.
The Judiciary Police personnel found out that the involved man re-entered Macao on 18th September 2023 and was staying at a hotel in the northern district. Action was taken immediately, with a base station busted in the above location. Base station devices were seized on the spot and the involved man, who was operating the devices, was arrested. He confessed that he was hired by a Hong Kong fraud syndicate with a daily wage of RMB1,500, and was responsible for establishing base stations in Macao. Approximately 2,400 phishing text messages were sent successively and a total of 1,408 mobile phone users had received the messages.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of computer fraud and using computer devices to simulate mobile telecommunication service station, while pursuing the other involved persons and carrying out follow-up investigation to find out whether more victims were involved.
