Mainland man arrested for fraud of currency exchange
On 7th September 2023, the Public Security Police Force referred a fraud case to the Judiciary Police that, a mainland man claimed to have been defrauded of RMB189,100 while exchanging currency. The Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police immediately conducted the follow-up investigation.
Case details revealed that the victim had come to Macao from the mainland to gamble. He expressed his intention of exchanging RMB for HKD200,000 to an unknown man at a casino in Taipa. The latter, who claimed that he did not have enough HKD with him for the exchange, would assign someone else to arrive and make the deal, while the victim was to wait at the casino doorway. Subsequently, the victim reached the involved mainland man who had come for the exchange, and the two agreed on the exchange of RMB189,100 to HKD200,000. The victim made a transfer to the other party’s mobile bank account who took out and handed over a stack of HKD banknotes to the victim before fleeing immediately. Realising that all were fake banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers”, the victim intercepted the man at once and reported to the police for assistance.
The involved man claimed that in August 2023, he was paid a daily wage of RMB5,000 by an unknown man to engage in the work of delivering money in Macao. On the day of the incident, as instructed, after getting the HKD cash in Zhuhai, he brought it to Macao for the deal. He confessed to the crime of fraud, but defended that he was unaware of the HKD cash for the deal being “practice vouchers”.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
