A pawn shop in NAPE area received a packet of melee diamonds with the net weight of 7.96 grams pawned by a man and a woman from mainland at HKD50,000 in early April. The person in charge of the pawn shop later found that the melee diamonds were counterfeits after thorough examination, and reported to the Judiciary Police on June 23rd. In the wee hours of June 24th, the involved persons tried to pawn another packet of melee diamonds with the net weight of 29.93 grams at the pawn shop again and requested to trade it at HKD200,000. Yet, their trick was seen through by the pawn shop assistant who then reported to the police for help. The Judiciary Police officers arrived at the scene and arrested the two suspects. Two packets of melee diamonds weighing respectively 2.39 grams and 1.86 grams, a diamond and several pawn slips were seized from the involved woman at the scene. They were all confirmed to be fake diamonds after examination. The pair argued that they did not know those were fake diamonds, and claimed that the involved melee diamonds were provided by a mainland man as collateral for loans and compensation for debts. The Judiciary Police transferred the pair to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (huge amount).
