Be alert of counterfeit notes
1. Banknote Examination Machine (UV Lamp)
It is the most common tool to detect the genuineness of a banknote. Under ultra-violet light, fluorescent images and fibres can be seen on the genuine note.
Please note: the watermark on each banknote is clearly visible when it is held up to the light. However, it will not turn fluorescent under ultra-violet light
2. Touch
Genuine banknotes have a better paper quality with a different touch and an embossed texture. A crisp sound can be heard upon shaking or flicking the banknotes.
3. Knowledge
Always keep track of news about the latest security features of banknotes
If a banknote is suspected of being counterfeit
1. Never accept it.
2. Report to the Judiciary Police on 993 immediately.
If you have received counterfeit notes without knowing it:
1.Never attempt to reuse the fake notes.
2.Never keep fake banknotes as souvenirs.
3.Do not attempt to tear up or dispose of the counterfeit notes.
4.Report to the police the time, location and quantity of counterfeit notes received.
Printing or using counterfeit currency carries a maximum penalty of 12 years' imprisonment upon conviction according to sections 252 and 255 of the Criminal Code of Macao.
