Proxy betting case busted, with a mainland man nabbed

On the afternoon of 9th July 2026, the Judiciary Police was notified by a casino in the NAPE district, indicating that a man gambling at a live baccarat gaming machine was sitting in an unusual manner, raising suspicions that he was conducting an illegal online gaming activity commonly known as “proxy betting”.
Personnel of the Gaming-related Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police took over the investigation and discovered that the involved Mainland man was gambling inside the venue that same afternoon. Wearing a modified jacket, he used a mobile phone to secretly film the gaming machine’s screen, broadcasting the gambling process live to a client in the Mainland, while using a Bluetooth earpiece to receive betting instructions and place bets on behalf of the client.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the involved man had received a remuneration of HKD300 each time he committed the crime. Since June 2026, he had conducted illegal live-streamed betting for the same client at least twice, earning a profit of at least HKD600 to date, and had brought more than HKD10,000 into Macao each time he committed the crime. Personnel of the Judiciary Police seized HKD10,000 in cash from the involved man, alongside crime tools suspected of being used for illegal gambling.
Based on investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions for the offence of illegal operation of online games of fortune or online mutual gaming.
