Mainland Chinese arrested for fraud of massive amount

The Judiciary Police received a report from the male victim from mainland China on the evening of 31st May 2026 that he had allegedly been defrauded of RMB 87,000, equivalent to about MOP 103,000, by a fellow countryman on the pretext of currency exchange.
Case information suggested that the victim had discussed with an unknown person about currency exchange in a mobile messaging group that afternoon and arranged to meet for the transaction at a food court in a hotel in Taipa. The involved mainland Chinese man later arrived at the scene to meet the victim. During the transaction, the victim demanded to inspect the cash, such that the other party rapidly showed him two stacks of HKD 1,000 in cash and demanded him to transfer the money before handing him the cash. The victim then transferred RMB 87,000 to an account in mainland China provided by the other party. However, the involved man instantly fled the scene right after confirming the transfer. The victim immediately pursued him, who was intercepted by the hotel security guards, and reported to the police.
Receiving the case and launching investigation, the Economics Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police did not find any authentic cash on the involved man; the two stacks of HKD 1,000 banknotes that he had shown were all same-numbered and apparently printed with “Prop” (prop banknotes), with the absence of anti-counterfeiting features, and colours, print and paper quality different from those of authentic ones.
During investigation, the Judiciary Police seized a total of 200 prop banknotes and a mobile phone used for perpetration. It was preliminarily believed that the involved man had been instructed to target at customers in need of exchange of Hong Kong dollars in Macao and trick them into transferring before fleeing the scene.
Based on investigative findings, the involved mainland Chinese man was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (massive amount).
