Local woman involved in aggravated theft and fraud of considerably huge amount brought to justice

On 27th May 2026, the Judiciary Police received a report from the person in charge of a handbag store, alleging that its female store manager had been stealing luxury handbags from the store and misappropriated purchase deposits over an extended period, incurring a total loss of approximately HKD21.82 million (including the theft of 35 handbags worth approximately HKD16.67 million in total, as well as bearing a total of HKD5.15 million defrauded from industry counterparts).

Case details revealed that on the afternoon of May 26th, the person in charge of the handbag store received enquiries from industry counterparts about the status of their orders and deliveries, only to discover that there were no related order records in the store. After checking with three overseas industry counterparts, they stated that they had previously placed orders for a number of luxury handbags through the involved female store manager, who acted in the name of the store. They had paid a total deposit of HKD5.15 million and obtained receipts issued by her, yet they had never received the merchandise.

The person in charge of the handbag store subsequently checked the inventory and sales records. She found that there were no records of such orders. In addition, at least 35 luxury handbags (each valued at approximately HKD60,000 to HKD2 million, amounting to over HKD16.67 million in total) were missing.

Investigation established that the involved female store manager had never actually placed any orders. She exploited her position as the store manager and the store’s name to falsely claim that she would place orders for handbags, collecting deposits and issuing receipts to gain the customers’ trust. In addition, since November 2025, taking advantage of her position, the involved female store manager had successively stolen 35 luxury handbags from the store. She resold them to local and overseas industry counterparts at a 10% discount on at least 20 occasions, profiting approximately HKD15 million. Most of the illicit proceeds were used to invest in cryptocurrency.

During the investigation, the Judiciary Police recovered two handbags worth a total of HKD400,000 from a luxury merchandise secondhand store in a shopping mall in Taipa, and seized a mobile phone from the involved female store manager.

Based on the investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the involved female store manager to the Public Prosecutions Office for investigation on the charges of aggravated theft and fraud (considerably huge amount), while continuing to pursue the whereabouts of the remaining involved merchandise and illicit proceeds.
