Pickpocketing syndicate smashed with four mainland men nabbed

On the night of 8th June 2024, a male Macao victim took his staff member with him and proceeded to the Judiciary Police to lodge a complaint, claiming that on the afternoon of the same day, as they were passing by the street in the vicinity of a hotel in the ZAPE district, two men approached them from their side and behind respectively, and opened the umbrellas in their hands abruptly. Subsequently, the duo sped off. After the victim and the staff member had entered the hotel, the staff member found that, the MOP80,000 in cash inside his trouser pocket, which the male victim had entrusted him to safekeep, had been stolen. It was suspected that the two men were to blame.

Personnel of the Section for Offences against Property of the Judiciary Police launched an investigation, and identified four involved mainland men. It was learnt from investigation that, earlier on, the quartet had been tailing after the victim and his staff member before perpetrating the crime. Two of the involved mainland men seized an opportunity to step forward to cover up the two pickpocketing accomplices with umbrellas, but to no avail. Eventually, after the victim and his staff member had entered the hotel, one of the involved mainland men covered up his accomplice who successfully stole the cash inside the staff member’s trouser pocket with tweezers. After perpetration, they fled the scene together with the two accomplices posing as lookouts outside the hotel.

On 10th June 2024, personnel of the Judiciary Police intercepted the four involved mainland men inside a guesthouse in the central district, seizing the umbrellas used in crime perpetration and the ill-gotten gains of MOP17,000, RMB1,900 and HKD1,100 in cash at the scene, while the tweezers used for committing crime had already been discarded during escape. Upon investigation, it was found that, apart from this case, the involved theft syndicate had attempted to steal the belongings inside the trouser pockets of two individuals (man and woman) on the streets, but failed.

Upon integrating investigative results, the Judiciary Police transferred the four involved mainland men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of criminal syndicate and aggravated theft, while continuing to track down if they were involved in other cases, as well as the whereabouts of the remaining ill-gotten gains.
