Mainland non-resident worker arrested for job referral fraud
On 27th May 2023, the Judiciary Police received complaints from two mainland men, claiming that they were respectively scammed by a male mainland non-resident worker with the excuse of job referrals, involving a loss of MOP38,300 in total.
Upon investigation by officers of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police, it was revealed that the involved man had falsely claimed to know “a top person” at a large-scale hotel in Cotai, capable of arranging mainland residents to work in Macao. A referral fee of around RMB6,000 per person was demanded. The two unsuspecting victims therefore submitted MOP16,000 and MOP22,300 respectively, yet were not notified of induction all along. After pursuing the involved man who could not explain the document application situation, the duo suspected to have been defrauded and reported to the police for help.
On 29th June 2023, the Judiciary Police officers intercepted the involved man in a hotel at Cotai. He confessed to have perpetrated the fraud due to his gaming loss. At least 7 to 8 mainland residents had been defrauded by him, with all illicit proceeds gambled away. The Judiciary Police transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (massive amount).
