Mainland Chinese man arrested in the rapid crackdown of a hotel homicide case
Informed by the Fire Services Bureau of the discovery of a male corpse in a hotel room in Cotai on 4th May 2023, the Judiciary Police promptly deployed officers to the scene for investigation, finding lacerations in the deceased’s head and injuries all over his body. His identity documents and valuables had gone missing, while blood stains and signs of fighting were seen in the room, hence a suspected case of homicide, prompting the initiation of the crime scene investigation procedure for felonies. Examination by the medical examiner confirmed that the deceased, whose head had been attacked with a hard object, suffered multiple bruises in his lips and neck. It was preliminarily determined that the deceased had been suffocated to death as a result of violent attacks.
Upon in-depth investigation by the Section for Offences against Persons of the Judiciary Police, a mainland Chinese man who had gone in and out of the room was identified. It was learnt that, with concerted efforts of several departments of the Judiciary Police, the man had fled Macao immediately after the incident. The mainland Chinese public security authority, which was promptly notified via the emergency policing communications mechanism, captured the involved man in Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province that very night. Interrogated by the mainland Chinese police, the involved man admitted that he had rented the room of the incident with the victim, with whom he had a quarrel over money matters. Other than his attack on the victim’s head with a travel thermal flask, he refused to disclose other details.
Based on investigative results, the Judiciary Police found that the victim had engaged in illegal currency exchange activity in Macao. He had traded with the involved man before the incident, after which he was robbed of HKD 170,000 of cash, a mobile phone and a golden ring. There were compelling indications that he had been killed by the involved man. The Judiciary Police, maintaining close communication and cooperation with the mainland Chinese police, pursues the perpetrator’s criminal responsibility according to law.
