Two mainland men apprehended for pawning counterfeit watch
On 31st October 2022, the Judiciary Police received a report from a pawn shop, stating that a mainland man had pawned a luxury watch for HKD30,000 in February of the same year. However, the pawn shop found that the luxury watch was a counterfeit when they inspected it upon the deadline of redemption period and thus reported to the police.
The personnel of the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police conducted a follow-up investigation and the abovementioned watch was confirmed to be a counterfeit after examination by relevant expert. They also learned that the involved man had pawned items of similar type before, yet the pawn shop had not discovered that they were counterfeit since they had been redeemed by others with the pawn tickets afterwards.
On the afternoon of 9th April 2023, the involved man was intercepted at the Border Gate Checkpoint by the Judiciary Police, with a counterfeit watch seized on him. He admitted that he and his cousin were solicited by a mainland criminal syndicate to pawn counterfeits in Macao and would bring back the illicit proceeds and pawn tickets to the upper tier in the mainland after completing the tasks. Subsequently, the criminal syndicate would falsely claim that the pawn items had been accredited by the pawn shops in Macao and sell the pawn tickets to others. Later on the same day, the personnel of the Judiciary Police intercepted the cousin of the involved man who had arrived in Macao with him at the same time, with a counterfeit gold chain and a counterfeit watch seized on him. Investigation revealed that the duo had committed the perpetration for 10 times in total since 2022, defrauding the pawn shop of a total amount of HKD155,000 to receive remunerations of RMB30,000.
Based on investigation proceeds, the Judiciary Police transferred the duo to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of criminal syndicate and fraud (considerably huge amount).
