Local woman arrested for embezzlement of goods
In a case of fraud transferred from the Public Security Police Force to the Judiciary Police on 8th April 2023, the female victim from mainland China, a surrogate shopper for luxury goods in Australia, had collected goods in Macao and forwarded them to customers in mainland China, via the involved local woman, since February 2023. On four occasions between March 13th and 27th, the victim successively mailed five luxury watches, worth RMB 817,800 in total, to the involved woman, whom she entrusted to forward the watches to mainland China. However, on the pretext of two of the watches being seized by the Customs during delivery to mainland China, the involved woman demanded the victim to pay a handling fee of RMB 300,000 to lift the seizure and a “grease payment” of RMB 90,000, totaling RMB 390,000. Feeling suspicious when the involved woman later demanded another RMB 600,000 from her, the victim came to Macao to confront the involved woman on April 7th. When the latter failed to explain the whereabouts of the watches, the victim suspected of fraud, hence report to the police.
Upon follow-up investigation, the Economic Crimes Division officers of the Judiciary Police found that the involved woman had pawned the five aforesaid luxury watches for HKD 665,000 in two pawn shops in ZAPE between March 18th and April 1st, where they promptly retrieved all watches. The involved woman admitted to her perpetration, having gambled away all the proceeds from the fraud and pawn. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved woman to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charges of abuse of trust (considerably huge amount) and fraud (considerably huge amount).
