Local couple arrested for fraud of considerably huge amount
In July 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from a local woman who stated that she had been defrauded of MOP 1.21 million by another local woman on the pretext of reserving hotel rooms and selling F&B coupons.
Personnel of the I.T. Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police learnt after investigation that the female victim had been engaging in the business of online hotel room reservation and F&B coupon sale. In December 2020, the involved woman proactively contacted the female victim, claiming to be able to reserve hotel rooms and sell F&B coupons at discounted prices. Trust was also gained from the female victim by successfully reserving rooms for her to lure her into transferring a total deposit of MOP 1.21 million via several Macao and mainland bank accounts and payment platforms. However, the involved woman then stalled the transaction with various excuses and even requested to borrow money from the female victim for turnover. As such, the female victim realised that she had been defrauded and thus reported the case to the police.
It had been proved by integrated investigation and assistance from the mainland police that the aforementioned bank accounts and payment platforms were all held by the involved woman and her husband, and MOP 830,000 of the fraudulent proceeds had already been withdrawn from ATM.
On 23rd March 2023, the involved couple were brought back for investigation from home and workplace respectively. The involved woman admitted to the crime, and the fraudulent proceeds had been spent on repaying debts for family member(s) and on daily expenses, while the involved man admitted that he had allowed his wife to use his accounts. The involved woman was also found to have involved in two other online purchase fraud cases, involving a total amount of MOP 4,050.
The Judiciary Police transferred the duo to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
