Hong Kong woman arrested for involvement in virtual currency investment scam
On 1st December 2020, a local woman reported a case to the Judiciary Police, indicating that she had developed an online romantic relationship with a man on social networking platform. The man recommended her to invest in virtual currency, but in the end she was unable to withdraw her money, incurring a loss of around 230,000 Hong Kong dollars.
After investigation, personnel of the IT Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police found out that the female victim was urged by the online lover to buy around 140,000 patacas worth of virtual currency via the customer service of a transaction platform. Later, as she was told of a return on investment, the victim was convinced by the customer service to invest another 90,000 Hong Kong dollars, and transferred the sum to a Hong Kong bank account. Eventually, the above transaction platform stopped operating and the female victim was unable to retrieve her capital. Suspecting to be defrauded, she reported the case to the police.
The Judiciary Police personnel identified the Hong Kong female holder of the above-mentioned bank account, and intercepted her at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Macao Port on 19th March 2023. The involved woman refused to cooperate during the investigation. However, based on the related bank transfer information, it was proved that she had received the above scam proceeds. As such, based on investigation findings, the Judiciary Police transferred her to the Public Prosecutions Office with the offence of fraud (massive amount), while continuing to pursue the whereabouts of the other involved persons and illicit proceeds.
