Three Vietnamese women arrested for involvement in online dating scams
Between September 2022 and January 2023, the Judiciary Police successively received complaints from three local women who claimed to have fallen victims to online dating scams.
Case details revealed that the three female victims had separately become cyber lovers with men, from the internet, self-professed to be foreigners. With the excuses such as paying fees for delivery of the gifts, the need of cash flow for business, or settling medical bills due to accident, the three victims were respectively induced to transfer a total of MOP224,260 and HKD5,128,000 to the other party.
Subsequent to investigation, officers from the IT Crimes Division of Macao Judiciary Police identified three Vietnamese women. Two of them had assisted the fraud syndicate to receive a total of MOP16,000 and HKD500,000 of illicit proceeds with their bank accounts in Macao, while passing on the withdrawn cash to another Vietnamese woman to transfer away.
On 13th March 2023, the Judiciary Police officers intercepted the trio successively. One of them claimed that she had honoured the request of her cyber British boyfriend to assist in receiving funds with her bank account in Macao from his architectural design firm in Malaysia. She withdrew the money and handed it over to the second arrested woman, who further transferred the money to Malaysia via Vietnam. Later on, when the first arrested woman noticed that her bank account was frozen, she appropriated the bank accounts of the third arrested woman and another person at large to assist in receiving and remitting the funds. The second arrested woman confessed to be engaged in underground banking, and had assisted the first arrested woman to exchange, on several occasions, around HKD500,000 and deposited in a designated bank account, yet the relevant transfer records could not be provided.
The Judiciary Police transferred the trio to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charges of money laundering and fraud (considerably huge amount) respectively, while continuing to pursue the other person at large and the whereabouts of the funds.
