Man arrested for fraud of huge amount
On 20th February 2023, the Judiciary Police received a report from a local woman, alleging that she had been requested by a strange man to hand over MOP35,000 to a strange woman on the grounds of her son’s involvement in a personal dispute. Afterwards, having found out that she fell prey to telephone fraud, the victim therefore reported to the police for assistance.
The I.T. Crimes Division personnel of the Judiciary Police launched an investigation thereupon and found that the strange woman, who received the money from the victim, had handed over the money to a man who in turn passed on the money to another involved man. In the end, the money was taken by the involved man to a jewelry store in the ZAPE district, and it was suspected that the money had been transferred therein.
On the midday of 28th February 2023, the Judiciary Police personnel arrested the involved man near his residence in the Northern district. He denied the perpetration, arguing that he had been requested by a stranger on the internet to receive the money involved, and subsequently purchased virtual currencies in the jewelry store. In addition, he remitted the money to the wallet address designated by the upper tier through his own virtual currency wallet and was paid MOP400 in the process. However, it was confirmed upon investigation that the involved man had used the related fraudulent proceeds to purchase virtual currencies, received the money with his own wallet address and further transferred it to other wallet addresses. It was believed that the fraudulent proceeds had already been transferred to the accounts of the telecommunications fraud syndicate via the channel of virtual currencies.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (huge amount) and money laundering, while continuing to pursue the ringleader and other involved individuals, as well as tracing the whereabouts of the fraudulent proceeds.
