Mainland Chinese man arrested for fraud of cryptocurrency investment
Three local women reported to the Judiciary Police in August 2022 that after investing in a cryptocurrency on a mainland Chinese investment platform recommended to them by a local woman from December 2019 to March 2020, they failed to retrieve their capital, for which they suspected of fraud and reported to the police. They collectively reported a loss of around MOP 1.23 million.
The Economic Crimes Division officers of the Judiciary Police found that the involved woman, using a discounted price, had lured the three female victims into investing in a cryptocurrency that was yet to be listed via the said platform. She also claimed that the investors could get a full refund in the event the cryptocurrency remained unlisted in the next two years. However, the three victims failed to retrieve their money on the due date.
The involved woman, who was found near Barra by the Judiciary Police officers on 18th August 2022, had been allegedly referred by a mainland Chinese man to the investment. All of the investment capital of each of the female victims had been handed to the latter. The Judiciary Police later transferred the involved woman to the Public Prosecutions Office.
The aforesaid involved man was intercepted when he was entering Macao via Portas do Cerco on 14th February 2023. He claimed to the Judiciary Police that the said platform was a digital assets trading platform that enabled buyers and sellers to agree on the trading prices, while such assets could be cashed out through buying and selling. He had allegedly assisted the three female victims in purchasing the aforesaid digital assets, earning a commission profit of around RMB 500,000. Upon investigation, the said digital assets were found to be uncashable. The involved man was thus transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount) based on the investigative results.
