Mainland Chinese man arrested for fabrication of crime
On 8th January 2023, the Judiciary Police staff came across a post on an online social networking platform, stating that “homicide and robbery took place shortly after the border re-opened”. A video clip depicting crime scene investigators of the Judiciary Police working at a hotel in Cotai was attached in the post.
Investigation confirmed that the post and video content had been fabricated. While tracing the origin of the video clip, the Judiciary Police IT Crimes Division found that a mainland Chinese man had published the said video clip on an audiovisual platform in mainland China. The content then went viral on the internet, leading to unfavourable comments and many reposts of the clip.
Intercepted by the Judiciary Police when he was entering Macao via Portas do Cerco on 9th January 2023, the involved man admitted being the first publisher of the involved video. He was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fabrication of crime.
Continuing with its investigation into other persons’ involvement, if any, the Judiciary Police hereby urges the public not to publish online any news of fabricated crimes with an intention to cause panic, or repost any unconfirmed crime news that could cause fright or anxiety among other people.
