Macao man nabbed for job referral scam
In October 2018, through a friend’s introduction, a mainland man became acquainted with a Macao man who claimed to be the chief financial officer of a large casino in Macao. The mainland man was then introduced by the Macao man to work as a restaurant chef or sous chef in Macao. Yet, he was required to pay two months’ salary in advance as a referral fee for the post. If the recruitment was unsuccessful, the money would be refunded. Without suspicion, the mainland male victim told the news to a mainland male friend. The duo paid a total of approximately RMB230,000 in succession as referral fees. Subsequently, the involved man used various excuses to procrastinate. The two victims proceeded to the Judiciary Police and reported their cases for assistance in late November and early December in 2022 respectively.
After the Economic Crimes Division of the Judiciary Police took over the investigation, the identity of the involved Macao man was mastered, and he was intercepted at the Border Gate Checkpoint on 3rd January 2023. The involved man denied committing the crime. Nevertheless, based on the investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (massive amount).
