Local man arrested for job referral fraud
Between December 2021 and February 2022, the Judiciary Police successively received reports from seven local and mainland residents, all of whom claiming to have been defrauded of a total of MOP2.12 million by a local man and his father under the pretext of assisting others to come to work in Macao.
Case details revealed that the involved man and his father falsely claimed to each victim that their engineering company had undertaken a large-scale works project, and that they were capable of assisting the relatives and friends of the victims from the mainland to apply for employment as construction workers in Macao. During which, they produced the relevant stamped project contract and explicitly stated that they would charge each applicant RMB2,600 or RMB5,600 for the processing fee. Each unsuspecting victim successively paid a total of MOP2.08 million and RMB70,000 for more than 500 relatives and friends from the mainland, after which the involved man kept delaying with various excuses. He even disappeared and could no longer be reached after being repeatedly pursued. Each victim then turned to the involved man’s father to dun for the processing fee, yet in the end only RMB40,000 and the ID documents of the relatives and friends were recovered. Hence, the victims reported to the police for assistance.
Until 13th December 2022, the Judiciary Police intercepted the involved man at the Border Gate Checkpoint with the assistance of the Public Security Police Force, who claimed to have been instructed by his father to purport to three of the victims that he was capable of assisting others to come to work in Macao, and handed over all the RMB70,000 received to his father. Based on the consolidated investigative findings, there were compelling indications that the arrested man and his father had colluded to commit fraud. As such, the Judiciary Police transferred the man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount), while pursuing the involved person at large.
