Local man apprehended for online romance scam
In June 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from a local woman, claiming that she was a victim of an online romance scam. She alleged that she got acquainted with the involved man through an online game in 2020, who self-claimed to be a local man engaging in a trading business and living in the UK. They became online lovers later. Until the beginning of 2021, the involved man said that he was coming back to Macao on the pretext of meeting the victim, luring her to give him a sum equivalent to around MOP68,000 via electronic payment, buying game point cards and bank transfer, etc. After that, he was out of reach and the female victim had no way to get back her money. Suspecting that it was a scam, she reported the case to the police.
After investigation, the Judiciary Police identified the involved local man and intercepted him on 6th December 2022 while he entered Macao. The involved man admitted that he got in touch with the female victim by means of communication software and had received money from her, but alleged that the money was borrowed from the female victim thus denied committing a fraud. However, investigation revealed that the involved man had used a fake identity to issue the female victim an IOU; the money was spent on daily expenses by the involved man and he had never returned any money to the victim. Therefore, he was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (massive amount).
