man arrested for issuing rubber cheque
On 24th August 2022, a local woman reported to the Judiciary Police that in 2016, she had lent HKD1.4 million to a local man for his business capital turnover. The duo verbally agreed on an interest while the involved man had issued a cheque as a pledge. During that time, the involved man had been paying the monthly interest on schedule. It was until early August 2020 that the involved man was no longer able to pay the interest due to the pandemic, therefore issued a cheque of HKD1.4 million with a payable date of 15th August 2022 to the female victim as a pledge. Later, when the female victim had tried several times to collect the debt but to no avail, she cashed out the cheque at the bank on 16th August 2022. After the bank replied that the cheque was bounced due to insufficient funds, she reported to the Judiciary Police.
The Judiciary Police summoned the involved man for investigation on 16th November 2022 who, subsequent to interrogation, admitted to have issued the related cheque even knowing that there was insufficient deposit in his account. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of issuing rubber cheque (considerably huge amount).
