Three mainland Chinese arrested in the crackdown of an online shopping scam
From December 2021 onwards, the Judiciary Police had received complaints successively from nine local residents and a Portuguese who had purchased goods on an online shopping platform but failed to receive the products or received fakes, even after depositing goods payment into designated local bank accounts as instructed by the seller, who refused to refund them and vanished. Collectively they suffered a loss of around MOP 36,807.
Upon in-depth investigation, the Judiciary Police identified the holders of three of the accounts and located their workplaces, intercepting the three involved mainland Chinese respectively in three eateries on Rua de Cinco de Outubro, Toi San and Taipa on 17th October 2022.
The trio was found to be relatives. One of them had been allegedly instigated by a mainland Chinese male friend running online shopping business to open bank accounts in Macao to receive goods payment from customers, which would then be transferred to the said mainland Chinese man via a mobile payment app. A reward of RMB 200 was earned for each RMB 10,000 transfer. From September 2021 to the time of his apprehension, he had transferred around RMB 630,000 to the said mainland Chinese man, earning around RMB 12,580. The other two admitted to have lent their bank accounts to receive goods payment as demanded by their relative, who would then receive cash from them and transfer the amount to the said mainland Chinese man via a mobile payment app.
Investigation resulted in indications that the case involved a fraud criminal syndicate, the ringleader of which had set up an online shopping platform, fictitiously selling handbags, watches and sneakers at a discount and luring victims into purchasing them. He had also recruited the three aforesaid arrestees to open bank accounts in Macao to receive the fraud proceeds, totaling around MOP 540,000 in around 332 transactions. The Judiciary Police transferred the three involved persons to the Public Prosecutions Office for the three charges of criminal syndicate, money laundering and fraud, while tracing the illicit proceeds and other involved persons.
