Cracking “guess who I am” telephone fraud case with four persons arrested
On 11th October 2022, the Judiciary Police received a report of telephone fraud from a Macao man, stating that on October 9th, he received a phone call from “his wife”, telling him that her phone had been lost and she needed to change her number. The male victim was convinced as his wife was visiting her family in the mainland at that time and the caller’s voice sounded very much like his wife. The next morning, the male victim received a phone call from “his wife” again, claiming that she had been detained by the police for some reason in the mainland and requested the male victim to assist in paying the bail of MOP 100,000. The unsuspecting male victim immediately took the amount to the outside of a shopping mall around Largo de S. Dominigos and handed it to a friend of “his wife”. When “his wife” later requested the male victim to pay another MOP 50,000, he felt suspicious and consulted with kith and kin. Later, he successfully got contact with his wife, and realized being defrauded, thus immediately reported the case to the police.
After in-depth investigation, the Judiciary Police targeted the man who collected the amount, and found that he had transferred the amount to mainland bank accounts and electronic payment platform accounts via three accomplices. It was also revealed that the criminal syndicate was involved in another three telephone fraud cases of “guess who I am”, incurring total losses of RMB 10,000 and MOP 77,000 to two male and one female victims.
Personnel of the Judiciary Police then took action and arrested the four involved persons in various districts of Macao. After investigation, there was evidence indicating that the quartet was recruited by the same criminal syndicate to commit crimes in Macao. The Judiciary Police transferred the four of them to the Public Prosecutions Office for 3 offences including fraud (considerably huge amount), money laundering and criminal syndicate while continuing to pursue the other involved persons.
