Local woman arrested for currency exchange scam
The Judiciary Police successively received complaints from three local men between September and October 2022, claiming that their local female friend had defrauded them of around MOP98,000 on the pretext of exchanging RMB with favourable rate.
Case details revealed that the three victims, via social media app, noticed that the involved woman could assist in exchanging RMB with favourable rate during July to September 2022, and had dealt with her individually to successfully exchange some RMB. Later, the trio successively transferred a total of around MOP98,000 to the involved woman’s local bank account for the convenience to exchange RMB, yet she continued to use different excuses to delay paying and lost contact in the end. The three suspecting victims therefore reported to the police for help.
Subsequent to in-depth investigation, the Judiciary Police identified the personal particulars of the involved woman, who was taken in for investigation on October 10th from an apartment located in ZAPE district. She admitted to have received money from the three victims, which were spent on her daily expenses instead of exchanging any currency for them. She claimed that previously she did exchange at favourable rate for the trio individually, but she was unable to provide any proof. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved woman to the Public Prosecutions Office with the charge of fraud (huge amount and making a living out of fraud).
