Macao man nabbed for involvement in abuse of trust and fraud of considerably huge amount
On 25th April 2022, the Judiciary Police received a report from the person in charge of a duty free shop in the Cotai district, claiming that five branded watches valued at approximately MOP420,000 in total at his company’s warehouse had been stolen.
It was discovered from investigation that, the company had terminated its consignment partnership of a watch brand with a supplier in January 2022. While conducting an inventory of commodities, it was found that five of the watches were missing. A local male warehouse clerk who was responsible for the inventory management accounted that, as constrained by the epidemic and freight regulations, all watches had been stored inside a paper bag on top of the warehouse’s safe. In this way, the watches could be sent back to Hong Kong in small quantities successively. The warehouse clerk claimed that he had no knowledge of the theft.
Having checked the pawn records of the pawn shops, it was found that the aforesaid warehouse clerk had pawned 20 watches in succession for a total of 34 times. Five of the watches were the stolen items of this case. The Judiciary Police interrogated the involved man instantly. He confessed that due to liquidity problems of his personal business and gambling debts, since February 2021, he had been taking advantage of his position to pawn watches of the company’s warehouse that were awaiting repair. The ill-gotten gains had been used for repaying debts and gambling. Subsequently, he had stolen other watches, and pawned them to redeem the previously pawned watches or pay for pawn interests. By the time the case was unveiled, he had stolen a total of 21 watches and a bangle. The involved items amounted to around MOP 2.263 million in total. Later, personnel of the Judiciary Police retrieved 12 involved watches at a pawn shop, as well as seizing a watch, a bangle and pawn receipts at the involved man’s residence. The pawn shop suffered a loss of a total of HKD 276,000.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of abuse of trust and fraud (considerably huge amount).
