Two local men apprehended for fraud of considerably huge amount
On 12th April 2022, the Judiciary Police received a report from a local man, stating that he had provided a warehouse address to receive a parcel containing 7 branded watches worth a total of approximately HKD714,500 from Hong Kong per the request of his friend from Mainland China. He claimed to have received a message in the mainland on April 9th, acknowledging receipt of the goods, yet he was unable to confirm who had signed for the receipt of the parcel. Therefore, he returned to Macao on April 11th and proceeded to the warehouse to verify the receipt of the parcel, only to find that it had disappeared. Having checked with the local tenant of the warehouse and the related express delivery company, he suspected that someone had forged the signature and removed the parcel, thus he reported to the police for help immediately.
Investigation revealed that the courier of the express delivery company could not contact the recipient when he delivered the goods to the recipient address. He then handed the goods to an unknown man and did not request the man to sign for receipt. Upon investigation, it was found that the male recipient was the father of the tenant, who failed to confirm whether he had received that batch of watches since there was a massive quantity of arriving goods and he did not need to sign for receipt or examination.
The Judiciary Police identified the tenant of the abovementioned warehouse after study and analysis, with him intercepted at the Border Gate Checkpoint on the night of the same day. He admitted to his perpetration, stating that the male complainant had learned that he was in need of money for turnover since his goods worth more than HKD4,000,000 had been detained by the Macao Customs Service due to his parallel trading, he thereby lured the tenant into conspiracy to embezzle the abovementioned branded watches. He was responsible for receiving the goods and re-selling them in the mainland, while the illicit proceeds would be shared equally by the duo, who would subsequently claim for compensation from the express delivery company by using the excuse of lost items. Upon his apprehension, two of the branded watches had already been transported to his mainland residence for hoarding. The personnel of the Judiciary Police retrieved all the branded watches based on the investigative leads and transferred the duo to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
Moreover, the Judiciary Police discovered that there was a large quantity of goods including cosmetics, new and old electronic products, etc. in the involved warehouse during investigation and there were even people coming to pick up the goods. Suspecting that the abovementioned location was involved in smuggling and parallel trading activities, the Judiciary Police thereby alerted the Macao Customs Service for follow-up.
