Local man apprehended for extortion and profiteering
On 8th March 2022, the Judiciary Police received a report from a local man who claimed that he had been extorted by his creditor, and dispatched personnel to follow up thereupon.
Case details revealed that in 2017, when working as a project contractor, the victim could not pay wages to the workers due to insufficient cash flow, hence he borrowed MOP125,000 from the involved local man, and had already repaid MOP90,000 by 2018. Thereafter, the victim was unable to make repayments as he was caught in financial straits. The involved man coerced the victim into signing two IOUs of HKD500,000 and HKD1.1 million respectively with the safety of the latter’s family. He also forced the victim to transfer MOP1,000 to him on a daily basis, otherwise the victim would be beaten up. Until March 2022, the victim's wife found that the victim was injured and thus uncovered the incident. The couple decided to report to the police for assistance after discussion.
Subsequent to investigation, the Judiciary Police intercepted the involved man in Horta e Costa district on March 10th, with seizure of the two aforesaid IOUs and the weapon used for beating the victim in his residence. The Judiciary Police transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of extortion and profiteering based on the investigation results.
