Two bank staff members nabbed for involvement in record forgery in relation to the exchange of commemorative banknotes
On 22nd October 2021, the Judiciary Police received a complaint from a Macao bank which reported that, a batch of commemorative banknotes for Macao’s Return to its Motherland and Chinese Zodiac (valued at MOP3.18 million in total), stored in its vault, had been exchanged into ordinary banknotes by others.
After in-depth investigation, the Judiciary Police identified the chief treasurer of the vault who was working for that bank during the period when the crime occurred. Owing to the fact that he had known the computer password for inputting cash exchange records, he took advantage of his position and forged cash exchange records twice during February 2016 and January 2020 successively, so as to exchange the Chinese Zodiac commemorative banknotes with the ordinary banknotes. In addition, during October to December in 2019, he employed the same method and exchanged the commemorative banknotes for Macao’s Return to its Motherland with ordinary banknotes for a total of nine times. Based on investigation, the Judiciary Police learnt that the supervisor of the involved chief treasurer had all along failed to expose the anomalies of the banknotes in the vault. There were indications showing that he had also been involved in perpetrating the crime. Upon evaluation, it was learnt that, should the involved individuals sell all of the exchanged commemorative banknotes for Chinese Zodiac and Macao’s Return to its Motherland, they could gain a profit of approximately MOP2.27 million.
On 12th January 2022, the Judiciary Police intercepted the two involved Macao men at their residences, and transferred them to the Public Prosecutions Office for three offences including aggravated theft, document forgery and computer forgery.
