Four local men apprehended for online shopping brushing scam
Between December 2021 and January 2022, the Judiciary Police received reports from nine local residents successively, stating that they had learned about part-time jobs of “brushing orders” on an online social networking platform, promising commissions ranging from 8% to 10% of the product price by surrogate procurement of a certain amount of specific products and full refund of the capital. Without suspicions, they applied for the job. Initially, the capital could be refunded and commissions were earned successfully, subsequent to which the opposite party requested to increase the brushing amounts. However, the nine individuals failed to get back the capital and the commissions after the transactions, which involved approximately 100 transactions and the total loss reported was around MOP650,000.
Upon investigation, four involved local men were identified and intercepted at their residences and the entry and exit ports on 6th and 7th January 2022 respectively. One of the involved men admitted to being the core member of a criminal syndicate responsible for soliciting subordinate members in Macao, payrolls and bringing the ATM cards to the syndicate mastermind in the mainland, while the other three individuals were subordinate members responsible for opening bank accounts, ATM cards, online banking accounts, telephone cards and submitting the ATM cards and telephone cards to the abovementioned core member.
The Judiciary Police transferred the four involved men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (considerably huge amount), money laundering and criminal syndicate.
