Filipino non-resident worker arrested for fraud of considerably huge amount
A local woman reported to the Judiciary Police in August 2021 that she had got acquainted with a man, an alleged petroleum exploration engineer based in Italy, on social media. The duo developed an online romantic relationship. When the man purported to replace components of a petroleum exploration machine in July 2021, he requested the victim to lend him HKD 300,000, which was then transferred to a local bank account shortly before she lost contact with the man. Suspected of fraud, the victim reported to the police.
The Judiciary Police summoned the holder of the said account for investigation. He claimed that he had received the amount merely on behalf of a Filipino worker, and that all of the money had been withdrawn and handed to the latter. Having identified the Filipino non-resident worker, the Judiciary Police intercepted him at the Immigration Building at Pac On, Taipa on December 6th. Although he speciously argued that the amount was the profit from a joint cryptocurrency investment with his friends, he failed to provide any relevant proof and justify the use of a third party for depositing and receiving the amount. He was thus transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the charge of fraud (considerably huge amount).
