Local man arrested for fraud through surrogate shopping of mobile phones
The Judiciary Police received a report from a mainland woman on 4th December 2021, alleging that she was defrauded by a Macao man out of RMB384,000 through the surrogate shopping of mobile phones.
The case revealed that the female victim got acquainted with the involved man, who self-claimed to be engaged in import and export trading in Macao, through a friend in the beginning of 2021. The man falsely claimed that he had a friend working for a certain brand’s electronic product retailer, who could buy the mobile phones of that brand at RMB500 lower than market price and deliver to the mainland for a freight charge of RMB300 per mobile phone. The female victim thus ordered 50 mobile phones from him, and transferred RMB384,000 to him in late August. Afterwards, the involved man stated that the person who helped to carry the mobile phones across the border was intercepted, and all the mobile phones were detained by the Customs, meanwhile sending two “Macao Customs Detention Vouchers” to the female victim. He was out of reach later on. Suspecting that she had been defrauded, the female victim reported the case to the police.
The Judiciary Police intercepted the involved man at the Qingmao Checkpoint on December 8th. He admitted to the fraud against the female victim, and the crime proceeds had been spent on gambling and the repayment of gambling debts. The screenshots of the “Detention Vouchers” sent to the female victim were obtained from a group chat. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (considerably huge amount).
