Mainland Chinese man arrested for coercion and assault
The Judiciary Police received a case of assault from the Public Security Police Force on 6th December 2021. A mainland Chinese man had attacked three fellow citizens, all sent to the hospital for treatment, with a knife in a hotel room in Cotai.
In the follow-up investigation, the Judiciary Police found that the four persons had been engaging in illegal currency exchange activity in Macao. They entered Macao together on December 2nd and stayed in the involved hotel room. Instructed by one of the male accomplices, the involved man transferred RMB 174,400 to a designated bank account on December 4th. It was later found that the accomplice had mistakenly sent him the account information of another client, such that he had transferred the money to another person. Despite the accomplice’s promise to retrieve the money, the involved man, not having heard from him for two days, arranged to meet the trio in the room to demand the allocation of loss. Refused by the male accomplice, the involved man promptly purchased a sharp knife, which he then hid in his coat, at a supermarket before returning to the room. When the male accomplice again refused to repay the money, the involved man committed coercion by holding the knife to his neck, prompting the other two persons to immediately step forward to restrain and jointly subdue him in the end. They notified the hotel security to report to the police.
The hospital diagnostic report indicated that the three victims had multiple cuts in their neck or hands. The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the three charges of aggravated coercion, common impairment to bodily integrity and prohibited weapon.
