Local man apprehended for involvement in fraud of considerably huge amount and computer forgery
The Judiciary Police received a report from a local man earlier on, stating that he had been defrauded by a local man under the pretext of joint investment in casino chip exchanging business, which incurred a loss of HKD200,000.
The victim stated that he had been convinced by the involved man to invest HKD200,000 in chip exchanging and chip rolling businesses in casinos in August 2019, with cooperation agreement signed by both parties. When the victim inquired the involved man about the condition of business operation in June 2021, the involved man claimed that all the money had been deposited in a casino VIP junket account and sent a screenshot capturing the deposit message to the victim. Subsequently, only under the victim’s constant inquiries, the involved man finally admitted that he could not solicit potential customers due to COVID-19 and had thus invested the money in virtual currency. Despite his promise of repaying the money in September, he failed to do so eventually and even could not be contacted. The victim suspected fraud and thereby reported to the police for help.
The involved man was intercepted by the Public Security Police Force upon departure on 8th November 2021 and was transferred to the Judiciary Police. Although he denied the fraud, investigation revealed that he had not deposited the money in the VIP junket account and had forged deposit record to defraud the victim. He was thereby transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud (considerably huge amount) and computer forgery.
