Local man apprehended for involvement in two fraud cases
In late August 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from a local woman, stating that she had been requested twice to remit a total of RMB160,000 to a designated mainland bank account by a local man under the pretext of urgent need for Renminbi. She was subsequently issued a cheque for more than HKD70,000 and shown screenshots of the transfer payments of HKD120,000 as proof. In addition, the involved man used the excuse of ordering dried seafood from the victim to issue a cheque for the sum greater than the order amount on purpose before he requested the victim to transfer back to him the difference in amount totalled MOP96,000. When the victim later found that the cheque issued by the involved man could not be cashed due to insufficient deposit and the previous transfer payments were yet to be received, she immediately dunned for the debt from the involved man, who could no longer be contacted after repaying her HKD52,000. The victim reported a loss of MOP240,000.
In the course of investigation, the Judiciary Police received a report from another local man, stating that he had been requested by the same involved man to exchange RMB2,100,000 and make remittances to multiple mainland bank accounts under the pretext of purchasing a cemetery plot in the mainland and that he would be given remuneration. Afterwards, the victim only received more than HKD300,000 from the involved man, who procrastinated to repay the rest of the money with different excuses.
On October 30th, the Judiciary Police intercepted the involved man in a casino, who was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office for three offences of fraud (considerably huge amount), issuing dishonoured cheque and computer forgery.
