Mainland man arrested for involvement in fraud
On 7th August 2021, a local woman came to the Judiciary Police, reporting that she bought the pawning slip of a local pawnshop from the involved mainland man earlier with HKD 3,000 for a mainland friend. The man later accompanied her to redeem a gold necklace with HKD 52,000 at the mentioned pawnshop, who then brought it back to the mainland to give it her friend. Her friend found that the necklace was a fake one upon selling it. Suspecting of being cheated, the friend authorized the local woman to report the case to the police.
Upon investigation, the involved man falsely claimed that he bought the pawning slip from someone else and resold it, but according to the record of the pawnshop, the involved man actually brought the gold necklace to the pawnshop to pawn. The Judiciary Police intercepted the involved man at the Border Gate on 26th October 2021, who claimed that he bought the gold necklace from someone in the mainland, and it was verified to be authentic by a jewelry shop in the mainland. However, he was unable to provide any proof of transaction or verification. As such, there were indications that the man had committed a crime. The Judiciary Police thus transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office with the offence of massive fraud.
