Korean man arrested for massive fraud
At the end of February 2018, the Judiciary Police received a report from a Korean man, indicating that he had been invited by another Korean man to Macao for negotiations on investment in virtual currency, but was subsequently informed that the transaction had to be conducted in Hong Kong dollars. Hence, he transferred KRW50 million to the Korean bank account of the involved man to exchange Hong Kong dollars, yet the involved man claimed to have only HKD130,000 in cash and thus refunded KRW3.1 million to the victim. Afterwards, the involved man deceptively claimed that the price of virtual currency was too high to invest in. He requested the victim to return the HKD130,000 and promised to transfer the corresponding amount of Korean Republic won back to the victim. The unsuspecting victim returned the Hong Kong dollars but failed to receive the remittance thereafter. He also found that the involved man was unable to be reached, therefore reported to the police for assistance.
Investigation by the Judiciary Police revealed that the involved man had entered Macao in September 2017, who had been overstaying in Macao from the time of the perpetration to date. On 27th October 2021, the Public Security Police Force intercepted the involved man in the vicinity of the Macao Jockey Club in Taipa and handed him over to the Judiciary Police for follow-up. Based on the investigation results, the Judiciary Police transferred him to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (massive amount).
