Macao woman apprehended for involvement in embezzlement and money laundering
On 19th October 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from an engineering company, indicating that a female employee of the company had pocketed an amount of MOP457,300 allocated for payroll and disappeared into the thin air afterwards.
During investigation, the Judiciary Police also received another complaint from a Macao woman who reported that she had received a scam call purported from “a mainland official”. As instructed, she booked a hotel room and handed the room key to the aforesaid involved woman. Meanwhile, she remitted a sum of MOP217,200 transferred by the involved woman to a Hong Kong bank account, but to no avail. Suspected to be defrauded, she reported the case to the Judiciary Police. On October 20th, personnel of the Judiciary Police set off to that hotel room and intercepted the involved woman.
Upon investigation, it was found that the involved woman had been involved in another fraud case at the same time. The female victim of the case reported that she had received a scam call from “the Public Security Bureau, Procuratorate and the Court”, and deposited HKD120,000 into the involved woman’s bank account as instructed by the con artist. The Judiciary Police found out that the involved woman had transferred the abovementioned sum to a bank account in Hong Kong subsequently.
The involved woman confessed that she had fallen victim to a scam call in September 2021 and had been defrauded of HKD45,780. Later, as instructed by the swindler, she received and transferred a sum of MOP123,600 via banks. Afterwards, she embezzled her company’s fund of MOP450,000 and transferred the amount to Hong Kong for “asset vetting”. When she learnt that the bank could only remit HKD240,000, at the behest of the impostor, she handed the remaining amount to the first female victim, and waited inside the room for further instructions. Even though the involved woman denied committing fraud, as she failed to provide details of the conman, the Judiciary Police transferred her to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of abuse of trust (considerably huge amount) and money laundering.
