Man arrested for fraud involving counterfeit banknotes
On 19th September 2021, the Judiciary Police received a report from a mainland man who stated that he had been defrauded of RMB 67,000 with “practice vouchers”. Investigation revealed that the male victim had contacted the involved mainland man to exchange Hong Kong dollars by communication app, then the two carried out the transaction at a male washroom in a hotel in the Cotai district. The male victim transferred RMB 67,000 to the involved man, then received a stack of HKD 1,000 banknotes in return. When he was counting the banknotes, he found that only two of the banknotes among the whole stack were genuine, while all the remaining were counterfeit banknotes, commonly known as “practice vouchers”. Thus the victim suspected being defrauded and reported to the police.
The Judiciary Police brought the involved man back for investigation, then transferred him to Public Prosecutions Office for the offence of fraud (huge amount) based on investigative findings.
