Gold shop theft case busted with one Vietnamese non-resident worker arrested

On 2nd April 2020, the Judiciary Police received a larceny case transferred by the Public Security Police Force. The larceny case took place at a gold shop in the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro district. It was learnt that, on the afternoon of that day, the involved man entered the gold shop alone and lied to the shop assistant that he would like to shop. While he was trying out the accessories, he took away two pure gold bracelets which valued at MOP33,140 in total all of a sudden and fled without a trace. The gold shop staff reported to the police for assistance.
The Judiciary Police launched investigation immediately, and traced the fleeing route of the involved man through Macao’s citywide electronic surveillance system (commonly referred as the “Eyes in the Sky”). After analysis, the identity of the involved person was mastered. It was also found that he had stolen around MOP20,000 in total on two separate occasions from the company he had worked for earlier on. Upon deployment, on April 5th, the Judiciary Police intercepted the involved man on the street near his residence. At that time, he appeared to be in a trance and his wrist was bleeding. Personnel of the Judiciary Police sent him to Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário promptly for rescue and treatment.
The involved man admitted that he had committed crimes. He confessed that he had been addicted to gambling since September 2019, thereby running up huge debts which he could hardly pay off. He confessed that he had embezzled funds twice in succession from the company he had worked for, as well as stealing gold accessories from the aforesaid gold shop and subsequently pawned the accessories at a pawn shop. He had gambled away all the proceeds of crime. Later, fearing of being arrested for his committed crimes, he rented a room in a guesthouse in the Central district, took medicine and inflicted self-harm by cutting his wrist inside the room.
The Judiciary Police transferred the involved man to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of aggravated theft and fraud.
