Three mainland men arrested for involvement in counterfeiting currency

On 19th January 2020, the Judiciary Police received a notification from a casino, requesting to deal with a case of found counterfeit banknotes. It was learnt that, on January 18th, after exchanging 12 banknotes with denomination of HKD1,000 with two Macao men, a mainland man used the aforesaid Hong Kong dollars to exchange chips at a casino that night. It was then found by a staff member that seven of the banknotes were counterfeit.

After in-depth investigation, the Judiciary Police found that one other man was involved in the case, adding up to a total of 3 individuals perpetrating the crime in complicity. On January 22nd, the Judiciary Police seized the abovementioned three involved men at a residential unit in the ZAPE area. Tools for committing the crime such as 20 counterfeit banknotes of HKD1,000 denomination modified from the commonly-known “practice vouchers”, paint and paintbrush were seized.

The three involved men admitted that they had conspired to modify the “practice vouchers” to counterfeit Hong Kong Dollar banknotes and gained profit by passing on the counterfeit banknotes afterwards. They confessed that, from January 18th to the present, they had already passed on 40 counterfeit banknotes with denomination of HKD1,000 successfully. The Judiciary Police transferred the trio to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of falsification of currency and passing on counterfeit currency. In addition, given that the involved unit was an illegal hostel, the Judiciary Police notified the relevant situation to Macao Government Tourism Office for follow-up at the same time.
