Two men arrested for fraud and transfer of counterfeit currency

On 30th December 2019, two mainland men had respectively made appointments with a “money exchange gang” syndicate via mobile phone apps to exchange currency at the flat roof on the second floor of a sizable casino in the Cotai district. The two “money exchange gang” members requested each of the two victims to transfer RMB 91,200 to a designated bank account, then gave them HKD 100,000 in cash. The two victims realized that the banknotes in Hong Kong dollars were all counterfeited banknotes commonly known as “practice vouchers” while counting them, thus immediately reported the case to the police.
Having carried out an in-depth investigation and examined the seized banknotes, it was confirmed that they were all counterfeited. The two involved “money exchange gang” members admitted that they were instructed to bring the counterfeited banknotes to Macao to commit the crime. The Judiciary Police transferred them to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of fraud and transfer of counterfeit currency while continuing to pursue the other involved persons.
