Guongdong and Macao Police jointly cracked a case of criminal syndicate, robbery and deprivation of other’s freedom of movement with five mainland men arrested

On the afternoon of 27th October 2024, the Judiciary Police received a case from the Public Security Police Force about a robbery that occurred in a hotel room in Cotai district, and swiftly mobilised personnel from the Case Reporting and Emergency Operation Centre, Gaming-related Crimes Division, and Robbery Offences Section to the scene for investigation.  It was learnt that at noon that day, the first and second involved mainland men contacted the mainland male victim and offered to assist in currency exchange.  Later, the victim met with the duo and followed them to the room where the crime occurred.  At that time, there were two other involved mainland men in the room.  During the discussion about the exchange, the four involved men suddenly pushed down the victim and tied him up, robbed HKD468,000 from him and fled the scene.  The victim later untied himself and called the police for help.  Investigation revealed that there was another involved mainland man responsible for looking out outside the room during the incident.  The five involved persons jointly planned the robbery, and took the crime proceeds to another casino in the same district for gambling after the perpetration.  After losing most of the proceeds, they shared the remaining HKD60,000 plus among them.

The personnel of the Judiciary Police intercepted the first and second involved mainland men, as well as the third involved mainland man who acted as a lookout during the robbery, in a hotel room in Taipa within two and a half hours upon receiving the report.  After investigation, it was found that the first involved mainland man let the second involved mainland man stayed in his hotel room even though he knew that the latter was overstaying in Macao.  In addition, the personnel of the Judiciary Police found out the remaining two involved mainland men had fled Macao after the perpetration, thus requested the mainland police for assistance through the emergency policing liaison mechanism immediately.  Under the coordination of the Guongdong Provincial Public Security Department, the Zhuhai Police intercepted the duo in the mainland during the wee hours of October 28th , recovering crime proceeds of over RMB10,000.

Based on investigative findings, the Judiciary Police transferred the second and third involved mainland men to the Public Prosecutions Office for the offences of criminal syndicate, robbery and deprivation of other’s freedom of movement, while the first involved mainland man was also transferred to the Pubic Prosecutions Office with an additional offence of providing shelter, on top of the above three offences.
